The third commandment states, You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain… (Ex 20:7a) But what does it mean to take the name of the Lord in vain? Is it simply not saying certain words, or could it mean more than that? Spoiler alert: it involves much more than words, and I’m sure we’ve all done it. Oh, by the way, the commandment continues saying, the Lord will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain. (Ex 20:7b) Oh, snap! If there are consequences for this, we better figure out what God means. This next section of Jeremiah gives us a glimpse of people who took the name of the Lord in vain and what the consequences were. But what does it all mean for you and me today?
